11/28/06: Nice and Easy Recovery Run!

After a nice, valient effort on Saturday, I felt confident enough in my recovery to run a few miles tonight. I actually felt pretty good, meaning that my painful icebaths and slower distance pace must be helping out a little! Just 3 simple ones...

11/25/06: The 18 Mile Tour de Memorial!

I can think of a few things I would like to be doing at 6 in the morning on a Saturday during my vacation, and luckily, running fits the bill! After getting some sleep (but probably not enough!) I got up early to drive out to quiet West Houston. It was a good weather morning, justtttt cool enough to make you want gloves, but nice enough to realize you could go without them.

I wasn’t sure what pace I wanted to run, although I knew I had to run with *somebody* as the TdM is notorious for getting people lost. Not to worry, I had my Strider buddies of Pam, Frank, Santos and Janet to run with. We ran a great pace, that probably averaged from a 9-10 minute mile. No one was trying to break a speed record, and we were all concerned about staying injury-free and healthy.

Wow, 3 hours of straight running, with a few stops thrown in there for water/GU/snacks. I stretched lightly when we stopped and devoured 3 Carbbooms and a package of Sports Beans over the 18 miles. I didn’t drink a lot of fluids, but probably had one cup of water and one cup of Gatorade every 3 miles or so. I do need to remind myself to look into buying salt tablets, as I was desperately craving salt at about 12 miles and sloshing a little water in my tummy, and oranges just won’t cut it when I crave something salty!

Overall, I was very very very pleased with my efforts and how I felt during my run. Although I was running slower then I would have liked, my body seemed happy with the pace and I wasen’t too terribly sore at the end. (A sore left calf and lower back, but that is to be expected after 80% of the course being on the dreaded concrete!) Thanks to Coach Steeeeve and the Houston Striders for another awesome pre-Marathon event. Bring on that damn 30k!

11/24/06: Another Slow Afternoon Run!

Another slow run…this time it’s because this one is after Thanksgiving and I had a nice little fill of food to slow me down. It was a good meal, well deserved though! I ran at 3 in the afternoon, wow, it was warm, but not too hot. When is winter really going to get here? (Or is that an illusionary thing?!)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

11/22/06: Nice and Slow Recovery Run!

I gave myself a few days to recover after Sunday’s stoic effort. So what if I didn’t run a 9:00/mile pace, I am very happy with my efforts. Although, I am still sore…and that made today’s 3 mile run hardly feel much like a run at all. I would say it felt more like a jog or fast walk, lol. Luckily, I made it fine and I will be fully recovered in another day or so, I think.

11/19/06: HMSA Classical 25k, a distance PR!

I have to admit I was nervous about this race all week…worried my ankle was going to act up…worried that I wouldn’t be able to run 15.5 miles…worried about running faster then a 10 minute mile and this and that…silly worry. Guess what…worry for nothing. I ran fine.

After almost not making in to the race in time (MAJOR NOTE TO SELF: MUST MUST MUST pack race bag the night before!!!!) and missing my downtown exit (ARGHHH!) I relaxed as I found a few Strider friends lined up near where I was. I figured I was lined up too close to the front, but after the last race and the ridiculous wait to cross the start (2.5 minutes--come on now!!!) I knew I had to line up SMARTLY.

I don’t ever make a point of running/racing with others…I have always told myself to do my own thing and worry about myself. However, after I saw Strider’s Pam and Frank and asked them with their pace was, I knew I had better stick near them as they known to be solid runners. I was predicted a 2:25 finish for myself (with a 2:23 being ideal), with nothing to base that on other then a subpar/injured Half Marathon finish of 2:01 a few weeks ago. I figured I could maintain a 9:20/mile pace for a few extra miles, right?!

We ran, and ran and ran. The first 10 miles went by very fast. The weather couldn’t have been any more perfect. Cool, slightly windy and the shadows of early morning downtown kept us shaded most of the race. Pam, Frank and I all ran together very well. We kept our own paces, but were very in tune to each other’s strides, so we were never further then a few feet away. It really helped having them nearby. I told them I hoped I wasn’t being pesky for running with them without really asking ahead of time.

They really saved me though, as I got to about mile 13 and realized I was starting to rapidly fall apart. My ankle was bugging me…then a blister on my right big toe. Then I felt really tired and my knees were achy. I got ahead of them a little, and bit the bullet hard. I knew I was suffering for my lack of training/running up to this point. I know, I know. This is my fault.

Mile 14 was soo long. I just want to be done, done, done. Stop the pain, stop the insanity of running 15.5 miles on such a cool and perfect day on a dumb hurting ankle. I put my iPOD on to any Dave Matthews song I had and sang along loudly. I had picked up speed, but so had Pam and Frank and I watched them pull away from me and told them I would see them at the finish.

Wow, mile 15. On the dumb bridge over into downtown. It is always the ‘worst’ way to end a race in Houston. You think you are almost done and this big dumb hill kills you right before you try to cruise to the finish. I clawed up it and pounded down it. It was taking everything I had. I am sure I looked like hell and of course I felt like I was in some major pain. I hammered the finish though and was quite satisfied I had finished in my ideal time of 2:23 AND could actually still walk normal, lol.

The finishers shirts rock this year and it was cool to hear stories of all my friends finishing strong, as well. Big congrats to Mr. Holden who had almost an HOUR PR this year on his 25k!!!! and Mr. Vic for a strong finish and I am very proud of him. I am most certainly looking forward to building my mileage again and training smartly for the 30k in 3 weeks and the Marathon in less then 2 months! Woohoo!

11/18/06: One Last Run before Sunday!

I decided to get up early and get a few miles in before tomorrow! My legs were antsy to run so I went for a stroll around the neighborhood. Lo and behold, about a mile into my usual route, I ran into Strider Chip! Apparently he lives right by my house now, so I have an extra fast training partner if I want now:)

Anyhow, we ran together for about 2 miles or so, just chatting and catching up on things. I showed him a cool place to run by the house and told him the mileage for some of the routes nearby. It was nice, and it’s always good to have company on a run!

Yeah tomorrow!

11/15/06: Mid-Week Long Distance Run!

I figured that I might as well get in a ‘longer distance’ before the run this weekend. It certainly couldn’t hurt, and I need the mileage anyways. Plus, I haven’t seen Memorial Park in so long I was beginning to miss it. So on a rather cool Wednesday night, I ventured out and got 6 in.

I have to admit, I was slower then I would have liked. But, I was running! I should never ever complain when I am running! The coldness had kept a lot of runners away tonight also, so there was an ever present ‘hardcore runner’ vibe going on. I liked it and welcomed it. All in all, excited and nervous about Sunday.

11/14/06: Third Time’s a Charm!

I knew ‘this’ was going to be the day…I had to get in one good run before I decided if I was going to do the 25k coming up this weekend or not. My ankle was feeling better, my spirits were good, and other then it being a humid AM run, I had a wonderful time. And guess what, my ankle didn’t hurt afterwards!

This is it…the race is on this weekend. I will put in a few more miles this week, and I think I can handle 15.5 on Sunday…it will be my longest race and run to date!

Stupid? Maybe. But I am determined, and I know I can do this…I will just treat this like a training run, run conservatively and try to get back to a schedule in time for the 30k in a month….I can do this thing. I WILL run Houston this year, I will.

11/9/06: Let’s Try This Again…

So I waited a few days before I got another run in. My ankle’s swelling is pretty much gone at this point and is just ‘a little’ sore. I did the same neighborhood route to see how it would go this time. Consensus-it is still a little sore. I guess I need to give it a few more days and try running again. Wow, injuries are fustrating.

11/4/06: My First Run Since…

The Half. I didn’t think it was smart to go take the bum ankle for a test-drive yet, but I was more curious then anything. I ran 30 minutes VERY slowly with the ankle brace on. I was pretty sore, oh well. I think I need another week to recover before I start to train properly again.
