NEWS: You Saw it Here First: The Luke’s Locker and Koala Health & Wellness Center Half Marathon!
So at tonight’s Houston Strider’s board meeting (and I believe later announced again during the general meeting), the Houston Strider’s-managed 20K that is normally held the 2nd weekend of October was announced that for 2006-it will officially become a Half Marathon. Luke’s Locker and Koala Health & Wellness Centers will remain corporate sponsors with other sponsorships that are yet to be announced. I am not sure where new information will be released to, but the ‘old’ website address is http://www.houston20k.com/.
My personal thoughts are although this is only adding an additional 1K on to the original race distance, I am willing to bet that this will give this race an even bigger draw across the state. The only difference (at this point) I see other then a slightly different race course (either at the beginning or end of the course), is that the race can no longer be marketed as the ‘2nd Biggest 20k in the United States,’ (based on 2004's satistical information complied by Jon Walk on the overall finishers of the race.) There will still be a two-person relay, with each person running 6.5 miles, which could make for a fun and unique PR (how many of us run a ¼ of a Marathon?)!
The best thing, no more conflicts with the Huntsville Half Marathon and the 20k on the same weekend! The new date-October 29th. Mark your calendars, I’ll be there ready to race and avenge my Half Marathon from January!

Cassie-it will follow the same course as in the past, with a slight variation either at the beginning or the end. The relay-team handoff will be in a slightly different spot, I believe also.

It isn't a bad strategy.
When John Bingham took over the Chicago Distance Classic and turned the longstanding 20K into a half, participation shot through the roof.
The half distance is becoming ever more popular and my guess (and it is only a guess) that the response might be the same.
And I assume with the new date that the race stays part of the Warm-Up Series and that with the spacing of the races that the Marathon starts on a later date this year - Sunday, January 21st - as well.

So, still a loop course. Blah.
Still, that's very cool. It makes a lot of sense to go ahead and add the K to make it a full half marathon, it will certainly increase the draw and still fits well into the marathon warmup series.

Jon-
I am not sure of the Marathon being one weekend later next year. However, the race will remain part of the Official Houston Warm-up Series, with the 25k being on November 19, and the 30k being on December 17.
There is also talk that the 10 Miler moving to the spring for the 2008 Marathon season, so it may not remain part of the HARRA Fall Series after this year.

Jessica,
Wow...a midweek post. And lots of info too. Nice.

Traditionally, the marathon has been on the third Sunday of January.
So the dates that you have posted would speak to the spacing to lead up to the Marathon.
Actually the Huntsville Half Marathon, surprisingly, didn't suffer this year with the event being on the same weekend. Many in the Kingwood Fit contingent there in Huntsville that Saturday told me that they were there for the hills - as opposed to doing the triple loop course.
Although the numbers are marginally small, the folks that run Marine Corps or New York City won't participate on Oct. 29 because of the date conflict.
It is certainly going to be a negative impact on the Pumpkin Run, which you would think would be the same weekend.
Time to start calculating numbers ... :)

Cool. Half Marathon has a cache and I think it is because the mystic word "marathon" is in it. Chicago Distance Classic has a great course, with downtown skyline, the museum campus and that glorious Lake Michigan to make it worth while. I'm very tempted to go up there to run it again.
Looping courses are boring.

I like the move! Guess it pays to go to the Strider meeetings! I couldn't make it being it was on 2/14!

Pumpkin Run timed 5K was already experiencing a downturn.
1,023 finishers in 2004.
743 finishers in 2005.

So, where'd ya go?? Hope you're still out running the roads, trails or the mills. :-)
